It is with heavy hearts that we acknowledge the passing this day of Dr Apirana Mahuika, who died early this morning surrounded by his whanau.

His passion for the promotion and protection of Ngati Porou Taonga and Te Reo ake o Ngati Porou was unrelenting as was his commitment to the self-determination of Ngati Porou whanau / hapu, and to education and the pursuit of excellence in all endeavours.

In total $15,250 worth of sponsorship money was allocated out to the marae who came first, second or third in the events they entered.

The programme for the day kicks off at 1pm and includes entertainment provided by the fabulous Maaka Pohatu (of the Modern Māori Quartet), a bouncy castle and water sprinkler for tamariki, a lovely kai and other fun activities.

When we first partnered with Contact to establish Nati Power, we said we wanted to start a power revolution. The revolution has begun and now Ngāti Porou needs to demonstrate its people power,” said Ms Houkamau.

Ngati Porou has much to be proud of, however we cannot afford to live off the deeds of our elders and ancestors. We must all make our own mark and contribution to Ngati Porou growth and development.

For first-timers or returning attendees, this uniquely cultural and spiritual experience begins with a 4am start assembling at the base of Pakihiroa Station.

Thirty-three events are on offer, catering for all age groups and interests from table tennis, to trivial pursuit, A new event for 2015 will be Ngati football (soccer).
